Information is Juxtaposition

Examining the meaning of information

Conscious Information exists in the juxtaposition of moments.   If we stop time and focus in on a frozen moment of 3-Dimensional Reality, there are no ideas, conscious information, or meaning that our human minds can comprehend.   But if we juxtapose two or more of these frozen 3D moments, and analyze the change between configuration of the 3D space, with a distance apart in the 4D Timeline, that is where meaning and information is enfolded.   Time is the canvas for change, and change is required for meaning/information/ideas.

Lets take the "idea/information" of "home/house".   In a frozen moment of 3D space, we could look at a house, whether it be an ancient tee-pee, or modern suburban house.   We can place a human inside that house.   But devoid of any other moments to juxtapose, the entire idea of a house is meaningless.   The idea of a house requires juxtaposing that moment of a human in a 3D house, with at least one other moment, or in the case of a house, many other moments, to understand what a house really does.  We have to see the human outside the house, dealing with rain, predators, or other elements of the environment.   The information/meaning of house comes from the juxtaposition of other events / moments where the house does not exist for that human.   The meaning of "house" is rich with details and importance for humans, as it represents protection from the environment and predators, as well as an extension of our conscious control.   Non of that meaning/information is present in a frozen 3D moment though... it requires juxtaposition of moments without a house to gain its meaning.

Juxtaposition is the act of placing two or more things side-by-side to compare or contrast. It is used throughout art and literature to create meaning from two or more things. The prefix “juxta” derives from the Latin root meaning “nearby, near, close.” Proximity is a great juxtaposition synonym to understand the concept. The proximity of one thing to another creates meaning.

The Kuleshov Effect
The Kuleshov Effect is a film editing phenomenon considered by Soviet filmmaker, Lev Kuleshov. It is a mental effect where the audience derives meaning from the interaction of two back-to-back shots.

Walter Murch, In the Blink of an Eye:  In film, at the moment of the cut you are juxtaposing one image with another, and that’s the equivalent of rhyme. It’s how rhyme and alliteration work in poetry, or how we juxtapose two words or two images, and what that juxtaposition implies. Either by emphasizing the theme or by countering it, modulating it, like an invisible Greek chorus. What’s being stated may be one thing, but by juxtaposing two different images at the moment of the cut, and making them as striking as possible, we can say, Yes, but there’s something else going on here.
